The Northern District of Iowa, U.S. Department of Justice seeks a paralegal.

The Paralegal will perform a variety of legal assistance duties in an office providing legal assistance to attorneys or litigation teams. Among the services to be performed include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Examines and evaluates information in case files, for case litigation worthiness and appropriate titles of law;
  • Determines the need for additional information, independent surveys, evidence, and witnesses, and plans a comprehensive approach to obtain this information;
  • Through on-site visits, interviews, and review of records on operations, looks for and evaluates the relevance and worth of evidence;
  • Selects, summarizes, and compiles comparative data to examine and evaluate respondent’s deficiencies in order to provide evidence of illegal practices or patterns;
  • Reviews economic trends and forecasts at the national and regional level to evaluate the impact of successful prosecution and potential remedial provisions of ongoing investigations and litigation;
  • Identifies types of recordkeeping systems and types of records maintained which would be relevant. Gathers, sorts, and interprets data from various record systems including computer information systems;
  • Interviews potential witnesses for information and prepares witnesses for court appearances;
  • Develops statistics and tabulations, such as standard deviations, regression analyses, and weighting, to provide leads and supportive data for case litigation. Prepares charts, graphs, and tables to illustrate results;
  • Analyzes data, develops recommendations and justifications for the attorney(s) who will take the matter to court. Continues to work with the attorney(s) during the progress of the case, obtaining and developing further evidence and exhibits, providing administrative assistance, and maintaining custody of exhibits, documents, and files;
  • May appear in court as a witness to testify concerning exhibits prepared supporting plaintiff’s case.
  • May draft detailed legal documents including briefs, pleadings, appeals, agreements, contracts and legal memoranda.

Polk County Conservation Board seeks a Parks Superintendent.

Position Overview

The Parks Superintendent manages and directs the day-to-day operations of the Polk County Conservation parks, law enforcement, recreational facilities, trails, greenways, wildlife and recreational areas. This person must be a strong leader, work well in a team environment and a dedicated conservationist. Duties include: planning, supervising and coordinating operations of the manicured portion of Polk County’s park system (beach, cabins, campgrounds, shelters, trails, security, park use permits, etc.); participates within the management team in comprehensive county-wide conservation planning: including outdoor recreation, natural resource management, land and water management, wildlife and fishery programs, and supervising professional and technical employees.

Located in central Iowa, Polk County Conservation Board (PCCB) manages over 20 park and wildlife areas that are visited by more than 1.4 million people each year. These public areas cover more than 14,000 acres including 45 miles of paved multi-use recreational trails and 40 miles of soft trails.

Position Responsibilities

The Parks Superintendent will be actively involved with the work of staff and volunteers involved in law enforcement, public safety, maintenance, and recreational and educational programming services (hunter safety classes) provided to the public. This position establishes overall operating standards for law enforcement consistent with the Polk County Conservation Board’s mission/strategic plans. Ability to work a flexible work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays is required. Excellent public relations and communication skills are required. This position is a member of the Conservation Agency’s management team participating in strategic and operational planning to increase operational efficiency for park services.

State of Iowa, Iowa Economic Development Authority – Energy Project Manager

The Iowa Economic Development Authority has an immediate opening for an Energy Project Manager on the Energy Team within the Community Development Division at the Authority. Candidate will assist in the development of the state energy plan for Iowa. Candidate will also assist in the implementation of the annual Department of Energy (DOE) formula grant and other energy initiatives for the Authority.

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major coursework in research, planning, economics, public relations, and experience equal to two years of full-time work that involved responsibility for interpreting laws, rules and regulations, and/or securing compliance with them; or compiling and evaluating statistical, historical, economic, business, financial, or technical related or program data; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of the above required experience for each year (thirty semester or equivalent hours) of the required education. Experience with developing plans, conducting research, knowledge of energy initatives, and interpreting federal energy programming, helpful.

Some travel throughout Iowa may be required. Position will be housed in Des Moines at the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Salary range is $48,464.00 – $75,192.00.

Prairie Rivers of Iowa – Watershed Coordinator

The watershed coordinator will be responsible for implementing a watershed management plan for the Squaw Creek Watershed. The coordinator will work closely with government agencies, non-profits, producers and individual citizens in the watershed community in a manner that is inclusive of all stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
• MS degree in environmental sciences, water resources, planning, or a related natural resource management field (or BS plus three years experience)
• Ability to effectively coordinate and manage a complex multi-organizational project
• Training and/or experience in organizational development, communications, consensus building, facilitation, and leadership skills
• Experience in grant writing
• Excellent writing, presentation, and public relations skills
• Working knowledge of watershed issues, non-point source pollution remediation strategies, and watershed management
• Ability to work independently, establishes work priorities, and manages time effectively.
• Proficiency in the use of MS Word and Excel, and ability to learn new computer applications.
• Understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) and their use in watershed planning
• Valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation
• Ability to work effectively with individuals, groups, and units of government

Salary and Position Details:
The Watershed Coordinator will report to Penny Brown Huber, Executive Director of Prairie Rivers of Iowa. This will be a full-time salaried position. Travel will be compensated at $.56/mile or by use of a leased vehicle. The position’s salary range is between $40,000 and $50,000 per year commensurate with experience. The position will (1) entail some weekend and evening work commitments, and (2) will be based on a yearly contract established from the starting date and ending one year or 365 days later. The position is currently funded for over three years and more funding will be sought to continue the position beyond that time.

Prairie Rivers of Iowa – Garden Coordinator

Prairie Rivers of Iowa is seeking a Garden Coordinator to assist with implementation of their Central Iowa Garden Project. The project is focused on improving the health of citizens’ in Boone, Story and Hardin Counties through a collaborative effort around establishing food gardens at schools and workplaces. Alongside the implementation of these new gardens, workshops focused on gardening and healthy eating will be conducted.

Position Description: The Garden Coordinator will work under the direction of the Central Iowa Local Foods Coordinator and Executive Director to help facilitate the implementation and management of new gardens and assist with workshop development and execution.

Desired Experience:

  • Preference for individuals who have Agronomy, Horticulture or other related education or experience
  • Prior research and materials development experience
  • Strong written and oral skills, including public speaking skills
  • Knowledge of and skills in gardening, health and nutrition
  • Knowledge of and interest in institutional gardening, food systems, and community health and development
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, different age groups and backgrounds
  • Capability to work independently and be flexible
  • Good organizational and time management skills

The Garden Coordinator position is part-time, 16-24 hours/week, flexible hours. Position is seasonal May 2015 -October 2016.

This is a paid position ($8.25/hr.) with possibility for credit hours if currently a student.
